Financial Planning

Before the portfolio comes the plan: what you are building toward, what could knock you off course, and what needs to be true for it all to work. We match you with fiduciary planners who start there.

Mapping out a financial plan

The plan before the portfolio

Many people arrive at an advisor's office asking about investments when the real questions are upstream. Are we saving enough? For what, exactly, by when? What happens to the plan if one income stops, or if college costs more than the projection, or if we help our parents?

A real financial plan answers these with numbers, then lets the investment strategy follow from the answers. Portfolios built without a plan are just collections of products.

Cash flow, insurance, and education

The unglamorous foundations matter most. Cash flow that funds your goals without anxiety. Insurance that actually covers the risks that would break the plan: term life sized to your obligations, disability coverage for the income everything depends on, liability protection for the litigious world.

For education, New York's 529 plan offers a state tax deduction on contributions, and the accounts grow tax-free when used for education. How much to fund, and in whose name, and against which other goals, is planning work worth doing deliberately in a county where private school and college often stack back to back.

One-time plan or ongoing relationship

Some people need a comprehensive plan built once, then reviewed every few years. Others, especially as complexity grows, benefit from an ongoing relationship where the plan breathes with their life. Both models exist in our network, including planners who work on flat fees for defined projects, which can be the right entry point for younger families.

Our cost page explains what each model typically runs. There is no wrong answer, only fit.

How we match for planning

We favor planners with the CFP designation whose practices are built around planning itself, not planning as a funnel to product sales. Fiduciary, credentialed, verified; see our standard. Begin here when you are ready.
